Every HDPE pipe on the market is defined by three numbers working together – and understanding how they connect is the key to ordering correctly. Get any one of them wrong and you could end up with a pipe that doesn’t meet your project’s pressure requirements, or one that costs more than necessary.

The Three Numbers That Define Every HDPE Pipe

Every HDPE (poly) pipe is described by three specifications working together:

  • OD (Outer Diameter): The outside measurement in millimetres (e.g. 110mm). This stays the same for a given size regardless of pressure rating, which is what lets fittings be standardised.
  • PN (Pressure Nominal): The maximum working pressure in bar at 20°C (e.g. PN10 = 10 bar). Higher PN means a thicker wall and higher pressure capacity.
  • SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio): The ratio of OD to wall thickness. A lower SDR means a thicker wall and a higher pressure rating.

The simple formula: SDR = OD ÷ wall thickness. A 110mm pipe with a 10mm wall has an SDR of 11.

How SDR, PN and Material Grade Connect

Here’s the part that confuses most buyers: the same SDR gives a different PN depending on whether the pipe is PE80 or PE100. PE100 is a stronger material, so at the same wall thickness it holds more pressure.

Note: Smaller sizes (20–32mm) are rarely made in the lower pressure ratings because the wall would be too thin to handle, which is why some cells are blank.

Standard Lengths and Coils in Malaysia

  • Straight pipes: 6m and 12m lengths (common for larger diameters from ~63mm up)
  • Coils: 50m and 100m (common for smaller diameters up to ~110mm, ideal for irrigation and long runs with fewer joints)

When you request a quote, state all four specifications: Size (OD) + Pressure rating (PN) + Grade (PE80/PE100) + Length/coil.
