What PE80 and PE100 Actually Mean

The number refers to the material’s MRS (Minimum Required Strength) – how much stress the polyethylene can safely handle over a 50-year design life:

  • PE80 → MRS of 8.0 MPa
  • PE100 → MRS of 10.0 MPa

PE100 is a newer, denser, more advanced polyethylene resin. Because it’s stronger, it can hold the same pressure with a thinner wall than PE80.

The Practical Difference: Wall Thickness and Flow

This is where it matters on site. For the same pressure rating, a PE100 pipe needs a thinner wall than PE80. That means more internal diameter for the same outer diameter (better flow), less material used (often lighter to handle), or for the same wall thickness, PE100 carries a higher pressure.

  • You need higher pressure in the same diameter (water mains, pumped systems)
  • You want maximum flow through a given outer diameter
  • It’s a gas pipeline or critical long-life infrastructure
  • The project specification or water authority requires PE100
